Dans le cadre du projet LIFE Marha, l’OFB anime une plateforme européenne sur les habitats marins. Après les herbiers de Posidonie, les roches du médio et infralittoral atlantiques et les habitats profonds de Méditerranée occidentale, l’équipe du LIFE lance l’organisation de la dernière conférence du projet qui portera sur les habitats sédimentaires marins des zones médio-, infra-, et circalittorales en amont du talus continental, de la région biogéographique de l'Atlantique européen (mer du Nord, mer Celtique, plateau atlantique sud-européen).

Cette conférence vise à rassembler scientifiques, services des états membres et gestionnaires d’Aires Marine Protégées afin de partager les connaissances relatives à l’état, au suivi et aux expériences de gestion de ces habitats. En effet, les habitats meubles représentent une part essentielle des fonds marins du plateau continental de l’Atlantique du nord-ouest, de la Manche et de la mer du nord. Ces habitats sont soumis à de très importantes pressions mais sont peu considérés dans les mesures de gestion et des prescriptions administratives d’usage du milieu marin. Or, les informations dont on dispose aujourd’hui soulignent l’importance de ces habitats pour l’équilibre des écosystèmes marins, pour le maintien de ressources halieutiques, pour le stockage du carbone, etc.

As part of the LIFE Marha project, the French Biodiversity Office is leading a European platform on marine habitats. Following on from the Posidonia meadows, the rocks of the Atlantic medio- and infralittoral zones and the deepwater habitats of the western Mediterranean, the LIFE team is launching the organisation of the project's final conference, which will focus on the marine sedimentary habitats of the medio-, infra-, and circalittoral zones upstream of the continental slope, in the European Atlantic Biogeographic region (North Sea, Celtic Sea, South European Atlantic Shelf).

The aim of these conferences is to bring together scientists, Member State departments and environmental managers to share knowledge on the status, monitoring and management experiences of these habitats. Sedimentary habitats are an essential part of the seabed on the continental shelf of the North-West Atlantic, the English Channel and the North Sea. These habitats are exposed to considerable pressure, but receive little consideration in management measures and administrative regulations governing the use of the marine environment. However, the information available today underlines the importance of these habitats for the balance of marine ecosystems, the maintenance of fish stocks, carbon storage, etc.
